Driving progress in LegalTech and reflecting on 2024
We’re pleased to share a guest blog from our Managing Director and Co-Founder, Aleks Tomczyk. Reflecting on his role with the Law Society of Scotland’s Technology Advisory Board, Aleks discusses the progress made in LegalTech throughout 2024 and the opportunities ahead to drive meaningful change across the sector.
As 2024 comes to a close, it’s a fitting time to reflect on the strides made in legal technology and the role of LawScotTech in driving innovation within Scotland’s legal sector. Over the past two years, I’ve had the privilege of serving on the Law Society of Scotland’s Technology Advisory Board. It has been an enriching journey, fuelled by collaboration with like-minded professionals who share a vision for a more accessible and efficient legal system.
This year, the Board achieved significant milestones. We finalised a forward-looking strategy, amplified awareness about the benefits of technology, and fostered initiatives that connect legal professionals with modern tools. These efforts are crucial as we navigate a landscape where tech adoption is increasingly vital.
Data from Exizent’s 2024 Bereavement Index underscores this urgency. The report revealed that 58% of legal professionals still rely on outdated systems for key processes, while 72% acknowledge that better technology could significantly improve efficiency. Yet, concerns about cost, complexity, and implementation challenges persist, leaving some firms hesitant to make progress.
Addressing these barriers is critical. By showcasing success stories and providing resources to demystify technology adoption, we can help firms see the value of these tools—not just for efficiency, but for delivering better outcomes for clients.
Imagine a fully technology-enabled legal sector: professionals empowered to focus on meaningful work, clients accessing services more easily, and a justice system running more efficiently. These possibilities aren’t just aspirational—they’re achievable. Technology can enable firms of all sizes, in-house teams, and public sector bodies to work more effectively, delivering real value to clients and communities alike.
As we look to 2025, our focus remains on fostering adoption across all corners of the legal profession. By sharing tangible examples of success and encouraging collaboration, we aim to create a ripple effect that benefits the entire ecosystem.
Reflecting on this journey, I’m reminded of why we do this work. As I often say, “Legal technology is not just about efficiency—it’s about unlocking new ways to deliver justice, empower professionals, and serve communities.” That belief continues to drive us forward.
Here’s to another year of progress and innovation in LegalTech.
